Rāma the embodiment of dharma

V Lakshmi Narayanan

Vaishnavism, which venerates Thirumal (Vishnu) as the Supreme Being, has flourished in Tamil Nadu as a vibrant religious and philosophical tradition, deeply rooted in Tamil devotional literature and Sanskrit scriptural heritage. This tradition, known as Sri Vaishnavism, emphasizes bhakti (devotion) and śaraṇāgati (total surrender) as the principal means to liberation from saṃsāra. The lineage of Āḻvārs and Ācāryas-from Nathamuni and Ālavandār to Ramanuja-played a decisive role in preserving, systematizing, and propagating this theology.
Within this continuum, the devotion to Sri Rama emerges as a central axis, transmitted through both Tamil and Sanskrit traditions. This paper examines the theological, devotional, and narrative dimensions of Rama-bhakti as articulated by Vedanta Desika in his celebrated prose hymn Raghuveera Gadyam, regarded as the distilled essence of the Ramayana.
Through a structured analysis of the Mangala Śloka and the sequential portrayal of the six Kāṇḍas-from Bāla to Uttara-this study demonstrates how Vedanta Desika synthesizes Ramayana narrative, Upaniṣadic thought, Purāṇic theology, and Sri Vaishnava doctrine. Particular emphasis is placed on Rama’s role as śaraṇāgata-rakṣaka (protector of those who surrender), illustrated through episodes such as Ahalyā’s redemption, Bharata’s pādukā-abhiṣeka, Vibhīṣaṇa’s surrender, and the assurance of divine protection granted through a single act of śaraṇāgati. The paper concludes that Raghuveeragadyam stands not merely as a literary composition, but as a comprehensive theological statement that encapsulates the Sri Vaishnava vision of Rama as the Supreme Lord, compassionate saviour, and eternal refuge of all beings.
