Mastery within: The Kaṭhopaniṣadic vision of yogic discipline
KS Latha
The Kaṭhopaniṣad, one of the principal Upaniṣads of the Vedic corpuses, presents a profound philosophy of the Self (ātman) and its realization through disciplined self-concentration (ātma-saṁyama). This paper explores the metaphysical and psychological dimensions of self-concentration as expounded in the dialogue between Naciketas and Yama. By analyzing key verses, especially those containing the chariot metaphor and the inner hierarchy of cognition, the paper highlights the path of inward withdrawal and refined meditation. Śaṅkara’sAdvaitic commentary provides an essential interpretive lens, emphasizing the importance of subtle discrimination and inner renunciation. The concept of self-concentration is shown not only as a meditative discipline but also as a transformative existential process toward liberation (mokṣa). In this context here explores the origin of Yoga philosophy and itcompares with the Upanishadic philosophy of self concentration.
