The Hindu scriptures, referred to as the ‘Śāstras’, are considered the root source of philosophy and prime authority for Hindus. From the Vedas to the Purāṇas and Dharmaśāstras, the Śāstras are actually vast and numerous. Men who were Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas and Vaiśyas are known to have possessed the eligibility to learn all scriptures, especially the Vedas, as it is a compulsory duty for them, evident from the writings of multiple Āstika philosophers. However, the views on whether the non-Dvijas, i.e., Śūdras, women and others who were avarṇas, were eligible to read and learn them remains a disputed topic till date. Factually, various darśanas or philosophies have held differing views on this matter, with no universal stance. This article attempts to examine and summarizes those of most prominent darśanas.
