The concept of Ādībīja in Vṛkṣāyurveda: A foundational perspective on the origin of plant life in ancient Indian botanical thought
N Sai Prashanthi
The ancient Indian discipline of Vṛkṣāyurveda presents a holistic and integrative system of plant life, cultivation, and health. Among its most profound contributions is the philosophical and botanical concept of Ādībīja—the "primordial seed" or the "first seed." This paper explores the multifaceted dimensions of Ādībīja from the lens of Vṛkṣāyurveda, examining its cosmological, metaphysical, agricultural, and ecological relevance. Through textual analysis, comparisons with modern seed biology, and philosophical inquiry, this study aims to revive the ancient Indian perspective of plant origin, sustainability, and continuity rooted in the doctrine of Ādībīja.
