Cerebralization in Ṛgveda Śākala Śākhā: Linguistic insights

Sandip Sarkar

The present paper investigates the process of cerebralization (retroflexion) as attested in the Śākala Śākhā of the Ṛgveda, with a focus on its phonological, phonetic, and linguistic implications. Cerebralization, the retroflexion of dental consonants under specific conditions, represents a significant phonetic phenomenon in Vedic Sanskrit, reflecting both the precision of oral transmission and the evolution of phonological patterns in early Indo-Aryan. Drawing upon primary sources such as the Ṛgveda Saṃhitā, Padapāṭha, and the Ṛgveda Prātiśākhya, this study identifies and analyses key examples where cerebralization occurs—for instance, forms like, पितृयाणम्,(Ṛgveda, 10/2/7) प्रयाणे, (Ṛgveda, 10/155/3) विदुर्विषाणः (Ṛgveda, 5/44/11) —and examines the conditions that trigger these changes, including the influence of proceding ऋ, र्, or ष्. The paper further explores the role of recitational practices in preserving these features and highlights how cerebralization contributes to our understanding of Vedic phonology, historical linguistics, and the interaction of Indo-Aryan with possible substrate languages. The findings offer fresh insights into the systematic nature of sound change in the Ṛgveda and underline the importance of the Śākala tradition in preserving these ancient phonetic characteristics.
