Relevance of Sanskrit studies in the context of Manipur

Huirem Sushila Devi, Telem Kamlabati Devi and M Manoj Singh

The current study aims to look into the historical context of Sanskrit language in Manipur and its influence on the Manipuri culture at large and language in particular. Even though Manipuri language has been in existence for a few thousand years, the influence of Sanskrit on the language is quite palpable. Even though Sanskrit as a language was introduced to Manipur with the adoption of Vaishnavism as the official religion of the erstwhile Manipuri kingdom, it quickly gained prominence among the upper echelons of the society. Even though Sanskrit and its relevance has taken a hard retreat in recent times, the study will look into its role in the current Manipuri cultural context.
