The scientific and philosophical analysis of nasadiya sukta on origin of universe
N Sai Prashanthi
The Nasadiya Sukta—a hymn from the Rigveda (10.129)—presents one of the earliest recorded inquiries into the origin of the universe, combining speculative philosophy with recognition of limitations of human knowledge. This paper offers a scientific and philosophical analysis of the hymn, exploring its insights into cosmology, creation and the unknowability of ultimate reality. From a scientific perspective, the hymn's depiction of a primordial state of "being" and "non-being" resonates with contemporary cosmological theories (such as the concept of singularity preceding the Big Bang and cyclical nature of the universe). Philosophically, the Nasadiya Sukta addresses the limits of human cognition, suggesting that true origin of cosmos may be beyond human comprehension; this aligns with both ancient metaphysical ideas and modern existential thought. By examining the hymn through lenses of modern science and philosophical traditions, this paper underscores the timeless relevance of the Nasadiya Sukta as a profound reflection on nature of existence, creation and divine; however, it also raises questions about the extent to which our understanding can truly grasp such matters.
The analysis underscores hymn’s capacity to connect ancient wisdom with contemporary inquiries into the mysteries of the universe; offering a holistic approach to understanding cosmos and our place within it. However, this synthesis invites further exploration, because it challenges preconceived notions of knowledge. Although the hymn serves as a conduit for such understanding, it also raises questions regarding the implications of this connection.
